Patty Cake & Friends

    (Slave Labor, 1997-1998)
™ and ©1997 Scott Roberts

Patty Cakes is just a regular little girl: full of curiosity and energy, but Patty has pretty much no sense of morals whatsoever. She’s sweet, but conniving; outgoing, but self-absorbed. Whether she’s making life miserable for her older sister, or being Daddy’s cute and cuddly little girl, you can bet she’s already planning her next adventure.

The series seems to be a cross between the irrepressible shenanigans of the Calvin and Hobbes strip, and the completely twisted zaniness of the Ren & Stimpy cartoon show. The artwork, to some extent, even resembles the show, with its tendency toward caricature and exaggeration. Also similar to Ren & Stimpy, Patty Cakes endorses the occasional fake product, much like the cartoon’s memorable “log” ad, a piece of wood advertised in the style of the real toy, “slinky.”
