War Stories

When one first imagines the idea of Garth Ennis writing a war comic book, one probably conceives of images of sadistic Nazi experiments and hellish battlefields littered with human remains. Instead, he applies his personal fascination with, and impressive knowledge of, World War II and yields a quartet of passionately rendered tales that are amazingly diverse, going well beyond his reputation as master horror maker.

Each story has its own definitive flavor, from the pervasive bleakness of “Nightingale” to the black humor of “D-Day Dodgers.” Ennis’ versatility blows apart the perceived stereotypes of the war genre in comics. There’s no heroic, war–loving sergeant who takes a grenade explosion for his troops, but there are everyday men who could have been our fathers and grandfathers—from both sides, heroic and otherwise—who try to survive a war that is not their own.

Those who normally shun this genre, or Ennis himself, should still have a look. This is most certainly not our fathers’ (or grandfathers’) war comic; but these are their war stories.
