Tokyo Storm Warning
(WildStorm, 2003)
™ and © WildStorm
A lot of Westerners have unsuccessfully tried to capture the zeitgeist of the giant robot saga, but Warren Ellis “gets” that, underneath all its surface charms and lovable goofiness, the genre is about kids playing at war.
First, he understands, then blows it all up with the dropping of an alternative history World War II nuclear bomb on Tokyo, which inadvertently creates the Neo Tokyo of a thousand Saturday morning nightmares. He’s off to a strong start here, as American Zoe Flynn is dropped up to her neck in a beautifully detailed, hostile, alien Japan where attacks could come in the form of skyscraper-sized reptiles or snide remarks from her coworkers about her anatomy.
But comics like these are made or broken on the strength of their giant robots, and the ’bots here are mach cool. OK, they don’t actually do anything this issue, but it looks like there’s a 100% chance of a monster-robot throwdown next issue.
— S.A. Bennett
