Invincible Ed

    (Dark Horse, 2003-2004)
™ and ©2003 Ryan Woodward

In an effort to preserve Earth’s future, an alien race decides to grant super-powers to one human being, Lance Lundgrin, an obnoxious high school jock who must share his newfound abilities with Ed, Chesterton High Schoo’s resident uber-geek. As fate would have it, Lance doesn’t change his ways; if anything, the addition of super-powers to his life only makes him more of a jerk. Underdog Ed, on the other hand, remains humbled by and uncertain of the abilities Nod, the alien benefactor, gave him.

Ultimately, The Invincible Ed is the story of what it takes to be a hero: it’s more than super-powers; it’s strength of character. And while Ed is a good person, he must find the confidence to be the hero that Lance is absolutely incapable of becoming. This is an excellent bit of character analysis from Summertime and Dark Horse Comics.
