Emily the Strange

Each issue of thirteen-year-old goth waif and merchandising bonanza Emily Strange’s comic book series feature several short vignettes illustrated in black, white and red with the occasional full-color treatment. Feisty, precocious Emily spends her time alternately reviling her deep, existential boredom or reveling in it ironically.

Minor mayhem and carnage attend her flights of fancy in such places as the taxidermy shop, the school cafeteria, and of course, the cemetery. Despite her serious demeanor, Emily uses humor and resourcefulness to settle her conflicts. Artist Buzz Parker keeps things interesting by varying the narrative and visual tones and textures from story to story.
