The Batman Chronicles

DC launched this new Batman series in mid-1995, capitalizing on the release of the movie “Batman Forever,” as well as the ongoing popularity of Batman. Like other recent Batman titles, this one fills a niche: Legends of the Dark Knight harks back to Batman’s past; Batman: Shadow of the Bat concentrates on psychological thrillers; and The Batman Chronicles focuses on the supporting characters in Batman’s home city of Gotham.

Batman’s supporting cast proves more than worthy of further study. Commissioner Gordon, the head of Gotham’s police force, embodies a sort of weary empathy for the citizens he tries to protect. At the same time, he sympathizes with the need for vigilantes like Batman. Even walk-ons like Anarky and the Huntress display a subtlety of shading virtually unknown in most leading super-heroes. Much of the credit goes to the top writers featured here, including Alan Grant, Chuck Dixon, and Doug Moench.
