Green Lantern Plus

    (DC, 1996)
™ and © 2000 DC Comics

In 1996 and 1997, DC Comics published several “Plus” specials that paired up some of the company’s most popular heroes with some intriguing second-stringers: Batman Plus, guest-starring Arsenal; Wonder Woman Plus, guest-starring Jesse Quick; and Superman Plus, guest-starring the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Green Lantern Plus pairs ring-slinger Kyle Rayner with the Ray, the son of the Golden Age hero of the same name who has inherited his father’s ability to channel the energy of light. The villain of the piece is the schizophrenic Doctor Polaris, the self-styled Master of Magnetism who has usurped Earth’s magnetic field and threatens to destroy Tokyo with his now god-like powers. Polaris’s rampage disrupts Rayner’s efforts to meet an artistic deadline and Ray Terrill’s dating life, contributing to the portrayal of the heroes as “everymen” for their respective age groups—the Ray as the hapless teenager and Green Lantern as the equally hapless twenty-something.
