Vanguard Illustrated was a rather daring (for its time) science-fiction anthology series from independent publisher Pacific Comics. One of the first big independents to emerge from in the 1980s, Pacific aimed for a more adult audience than its mainstream rivals Marvel and DC. As a result, the stories of this series featured occasional nudity and controversial topics in addition to some excellent science-fiction.
Mixed in with the lot was “Encyclopedias,” a four-part tale of door-to-door sales tactics in a post-apocalyptic world. This story was an early team-up between writer Mike Baron and artist Steve Rude, a team who gained prominence for their collaborations on Badger and Nexus. This seventh issue of this series also featured the first appearance of Mr. Monster.
