Phoenix: The Untold Story
(Marvel, 1984)
™ and ©1980, 1983 Marvel Entertainment Group
In X-Men (1st Series) #101, Jean Grey, a.k.a. Marvel Girl “died” to save the lives of her teammates. But she rose again as Phoenix, a psychic of incredible power. She continued with the X-Men for a number of issues, until an encounter with the Hellfire Club released the evil within her, and she became Dark Phoenix. In that incarnation, her might was nearly without limit, and she exercised it first by defeating the X-Men, then by consuming an entire star— causing the deaths of five billion sentient beings in that system. Later, Jean Grey finally won the war against her dark self, and reverted to Marvel Girl.
But Dark Phoenix’s crimes could be neither forgiven nor forgotten. In issue #137, the X-Men fought a losing battle against the Shi-ar to save her life. In the end, Jean Grey took her own life to prevent Dark Phoenix from reappearing. This special edition reprints Phoenix’s final issue, along with a previously unpublished ending.
