Genesis, the 1997 company-wide crossover of the DC line, was the brainchild of writer/artist John Byrne. The Godwave, a cyclical event, whose great power has been responsible in the past for the rise of metahumans and super-heroes, returns to wreak havoc on the status quo and compel readers to follow its influence throughout the DC line.

Aside from mysteriously causing the powers of super-heroes to become unreliable, this wave of energy afflicted humans with a sense of despair and hopelessness. Since Darkseid planned to use this event for his own malevolent ends, this mini-series was closely tied to Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, which was also written by John Byrne.
