In fiction, Nazis and the supernatural seem to go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Maybe it’s because dark and scary elements seem to fit in with the dark period of history that was World War II. Or perhaps it’s scary to think that there’s something even creepier and more evil than Nazis. The combination worked in the Indiana Jones movies and in Hellboy comics. Set in 1941, The Keep finds a group of SS soldiers stationed at a mysterious castle that has scared off past visitors. Writer F. Paul Wilson and artist Matthew Smith adapt Wilson’s book to create a comic that is creepy and strange like an old, silent German horror film.
