X-Men: Colossus: Bloodline

Peter Rasputin, newly returned to the Uncanny X-Men, is having nightmares. Flashing back to a sealed room where he was being kept before his rescue, he is getting the feeling that something’s not quite right. Then, one night, Peter gets an urgent call from his cousin, Larisa, who tells him someone is killing off members of their family.

A mysterious masked man is hunting them down one by one and deaths are being attributed to lightening, freak fires, and everything but the truth. The only clue lies in their common ancestor from Russian history—Grigory Efimovich Rasputin. Meanwhile, Kitty Pryde is searching for ways to save her friend from what could be an insane depression. Can Peter conquer his own demons and still save what’s left of his family?

From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:

Fans wanting yet another comic book starring an individual member of Marvel’s mutant super-team should be interested in X-Men: Colossus Bloodline #1 (of 5), a fairly compelling mystery in which a scary-looking masked figure is committing a series of related (so to speak), horribly grisly murders. Pencil and ink artist Jorge Lucas, fresh off the “House of M” story arc in The Incredible Hulk, does a fine job evoking the depressing tone of the script by delivering visuals that would feel at home in one of Vertigo’s horror titles.

Even more interesting than the mystery elements of the tale is the further development of the title character, who, as True Believers know, was brought back to life (to make a long story short) within the pages of Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men. Suffering inner turmoil and nightmares as a result of his imprisonment, Colossus doesn’t quite feel himself (literally and figuratively). The interaction between Colossus, Kitty Pryde, and Emma Frost shows that writer David Hine understands the current state of these heroes well.
