Xena and her companion, Gabrielle, wander the ancient world encountering and, invariably, fighting myriad monsters, both mystical and human. The confidence, self-assured style and sarcastic quips that Xena displays during her swordplay may seem familiar to readers of Red Sonja or Conan the Barbarian. However, unlike those Robert E. Howard characters, her stories have a loose basis in Greek mythology rather than the fictional Hyborian Age, since the Xena character is a spinoff of the Hercules television show.
