Originally serialized in the pages of Dark Horse Presents, this is the story that started the Sin City phenomenon, which includes five more miniseries, several one-shots, and a movie adaptation by Robert Rodriguez. Already a legend in the field for his work on Daredevil and Batman, writer and artist Frank Miller tried out a stark new art style for this book. Coupled with a hard-boiled script that echoes Mickey Spillane, the result is a raw, stylish, violent, and uncompromising tale about an unlucky lug named Marv who embarks on a bloody quest for vengeance. Though Miller’s Sin City books would continue to evolve creatively, this first tale remains arguably the best of the bunch, as evidenced by its prominence in the big screen version. But as good as the movie is, nothing can quite match the intensity of the original.
