2001 Nights was an ambitious anthology series from Japanese creator Yukinobu Hoshino. Regarded as one of the best classical science-fiction comics creators in his home country, his sprawling 2001 Nights was collected and translated into English by Viz in 1990.

The stories in this series are loosely related episodes from man’s exploration of the galaxy. Hoshino’s tales are vast in scope and cinematic in quality. The opening story, “Earthglow,” sets the tone as a nervous U.S. space shuttle crew carries an unknown cargo toward its ultimate destination in space, while the world below sits poised on the brink of global war. After running a gauntlet of killer satellites and closing in on the Russian space station, the nature of their mission is revealed. They were not there to start a war, they were there to prevent one. Their cargo was human—the U.S. President—there to meet with his Russian counterpart to broker a peace, miles above Earth.
