Identity Crisis

Togther, they are DC’s greatest heroes. The mighty Justice League has had many triumphs and glories to reflect back on, but like any close–knit group, they also have their secrets. And when a shocking and brutal murder cuts to their heart, it becomes clear that some secrets, and some enemies, refuse to stay buried. Now, at the urging of Elongated Man Ralph Dibny, the Justice League must revisit their lowest moment, if only to get through their latest tragedy… or perhaps to exact revenge.

This tragic and intense miniseries of superheroes from today and yesterday is by Brad Metzer, Rags Morales, and Michael Bair, with covers by Michael Turner.

From the Comics Buyer’s Guide:

Even the super-powered can feel impotent in a world in which innocent bystanders become increasingly victimized. When the Elongated Man’s wife, Sue Dibny, is mysteriously murdered, the JLA rampages through the list of suspects, only to discover that the killer is still at large and targeting more of their families. However, was the team’s past attempt to cover up a heinous crime responsible for this dilemma?

As their ire shifts from Doctor Light to his bodyguard Deathstroke and then back to themselves, The JLA frays at the seams. The Flash prods Green Arrow to delve into unwelcome memories, as the body count rises, relationships shatter, and heroes question their calling.

This seven-issue series was the cornerstone of DC’s latest universe-wide plot promotion and effort to follow Marvel’s lead into a market of unrepentant physical and psychological violence. Brad Meltzer crafts a tangled web of melodrama with crime-thriller technique, Rags Morales dutifully executes the straining of both muscles and minds, and this hardcover is a quality keepsake. But, ironically, DC has cannibalized its history in its own identity crisis.
