Enchanter: Prelude to Apocalypse

    (Express, 1993)
™ and ©1992 Don Chin and Mike Dringenberg

Although published by the satire-oriented Express Press (now defunct) and written by Don Chin, author of Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, Enchanter is a “serious” fantasy, filled with a sense of apocalyptic doom and Pyrrhic victory. Spell-casting elves like Markisham and Cecimuir must learn their craft fast in a world of close danger and approaching trials. Enchanter was also one of the first appearances of noted artist Mike Dringenberg (Sandman), the first three issues done when he was just 19 years old.

In a genre filled with hyper-kinetic and hyper-muscled heroes and spell-casters, Enchanter is fairly unique in its thoughtful scripts and its depiction of a world that, while fictitious, has all the trappings of our own.
