Chili

Chili, red-headed rival to Marvel’s teen-fashion mainstay Millie the Model, got her own book in 1967 as Marvel attempted to reach beyond its niche in the super-hero market and attract a larger share of female readers. Vain, flighty Chili largely avoids the Archie-like quality inherent in practically all American teen humor comics, offering more witty banter, an element of high-fashion and plain old late-1960s weirdness (weird like The Graduate, that is, not like R. Crumb). Stan Lee is at his campiest in the scripts for these issues, which sometimes read like Stan’s take on a Marx Brothers routine.
