Drawn & Quarterly Showcase
(Drawn and Quarterly, 2003-2006, 2008)
™ and © Drawn and Quarterly
Drawn & Quarterly likes to give its talent room to breathe, and the result is four creators stretched over 100 pages. Of course “stretched” is perhaps an imperfect adjective since none of these writer/artists gives the impression of killing time. The friendly art is the vehicle for a much more disturbing play-adventure that is successfully unsettling. Geneviève Elverum, interestingly, uses blank backgrounds and an open panel for the summer adventures of her characters in “We’re Wolf!” before sealing the world in solid horizons for the winter. Sammy Harkham captures teenage drift with “Somersaulting” and an art style that makes his characters look clumsy while the work itself appears graceful. Matt Broersma’s contribution is the most light-hearted, two seemingly unconnected tales that actually link up. It’s pulp with a less lurid bend.
