Marvel Age Fantastic Four

For some time, the comic book industry has been watching its fan-base both shrink and age, and the prevailing questions have been: “Why aren’t kids reading comics these days?” and “What can we do about it?” Some folks believe that continuity is a problem. The Fantastic Four, for example, have over four decades of stories behind them, and would-be young readers may be put off by not being able to jump in on the ground floor—which brings us to the Marvel Age line of “All Ages” comics and, more specifically, Marvel Age Fantastic Four. The concept here is the retelling of the stories that started the Marvel Universe in the popular anime/manga-influenced style, so the first issue of the Fantastic Four title begins with the threat of the Mole Man and the introduction of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm as the world’s greatest adventurers—together again for the first time. Based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original plot for Fantastic Four #1, this is good, old-fashioned comic book storytelling in a contemporary wrapper.
