The Cat With a Really Big Head and One Other Story That Isn’t as Good

Roman Dirge has written an illustrated story that sounds as if it could be a children’s tale told by a favorite uncle who means well but has no idea what he’s doing. The concept — a cat with an elephantine head — is offbeat to begin with, but the dialogue absolutely makes the story.

When readers are told that the newborn cat “wiggled that kind of wiggle a massively deformed kitten wiggles,” it is just the beginning of the dry humor that permeates the narrative.

The illustrations propel the story forward with the same cynical attitude expressed visually. While not truly intended as a children’s book, no real harm would come from sharing it with a child whose twisted sense of humor would appreciate it.

The other story, about Alisa McGee, a cute little dead girl, should not surprise anyone, coming from Dirge, creator of Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl. It’s not bad, but, as the cover says, it’s not as good.
