This action series is a great example of genre fiction done right. Bo Hampton spins a compelling yarn about a British heiress who has been kidnapped. The kidnappers have the girl’s father under constant scrutiny, and warn that if he sends anyone to retrieve her, they’ll kill her without hesitation.

In desperation, he turns to John Luger, a legendary—yet reclusive—adventurer and soldier of fortune, last seen in the vicinity of St. Louis, Missouri. When the father’s assistants locate Luger, they find him missing an arm, and working his way into alcoholism. What’s more, they discover that Luger’s sister is a beautiful, cunning, and psychotic vixen who has taken on the role of everything from a test pilot to a prostitute. Although Luger is far from excited about taking on this new commission, his hand is forced when his sister disappears—apparently to masquerade as the missing daughter!
