Squadron Supreme was a twelve-issue mini-series which painted a dark vision of super-heroes determining the fate of the world. Although it uses Marvel characters, it should be thought of as an “alternate reality” story.

It began when Kyle Richmond (Nighthawk) quit the Defenders, deciding he could help the world more by becoming a congressman. He succeeded, and eventually became president of the United States. Then, a being called the Overmind struck, controlling Richmond’s mind, the minds of his top advisors, and those of the Squadron Supreme (the government’s top super-heroes). Under the Overmind’s influence, the U.S. waged war against the entire world, eventually conquering it. By the time the Squadron Supreme threw off the Overmind’s control, the world was in shambles. They decided to embark on a bold new plan: to use their powers to turn the world in to a utopia. The catch: they would become its absolute rulers.
