Eye of Mongombo

    (Fantagraphics, 1989, 1991)
™ and ©1991 Dog Gray

Once in a while there are diamonds-in-the-rough waiting to be found in the land of mendacity that the comic world finds itself mired. There are overexcited super-heroes, depressed teens, deadly cyborgs and gritty urban dramas. Lo and behold something completely different appears in the view screen. It’s something for the ‘thinking reader’ who has exited the super-hero genre faster than a speeding bullet. Oops—wrong title! The humor is broad based, yet subtle satire can be found between the lines. The stories bounce around madly, from genre to genre, with unexpected twists on each page. Although the material is funny it nonetheless failed to find its audience, and the title only ran for 7 issues.
