Spawn: Angela’s Hunt
(Image, 1998)
™ and © Image Comics, Inc.
Originally published in 1994 as a three-issue mini-series (Angela), Spawn: Angela’s Hunt compiles the series in one book, expanding on the popular character from Spawn mythology. As a highly decorated and respected warrior angel, Angela claims Heaven’s most successful rate of hunting and ridding the world of Hell’s soldiers. In a bizarre act of deception, she is charged with treason and ordered to stand trial in the Elysium—home of the angels. Her friends disbelieve the charges and set about uncovering evidence to refute them.
They recruit Spawn, the Earth-bound soldier of Hell, whom Angela last hunted, to go before the judge. However, when Angela and Spawn last met, Angela was the hunter and Spawn her prey. They were an even match, neither able to best the other. Now, the tables are turned and Angela must ask her prey to defend her in a court where mercy is never an option.
Introduced to the title early on in its career, Angela has become a popular character among fans and professionals alike. Writing about angels who are closer in personality to everyday humans has become quite popular within the medium and who better to helm this project then Neil Gaiman himself? No stranger to mythical creatures, the celebrated author adds his own unique take on the heavenly host, creating angels that are more flawed than perfect. While their motives are ultimately pure, their actions are everything but. The violence and hints of lesbianism push the envelope in ways that Sandman and Good Omens only touched upon.
