JLA: Gatekeeper

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a raft of deluxe format limited series starring the Justice League. Some were truly wonderful, some were a waste of paper, and some defied description. Gatekeeper fits into the last category. The Prestige format set of three, all written by Tim Truman, has Green Lantern drawing the JLA into an ancient Sumerian version of Hell to rescue an archeological colleague whom he abandoned years ago. With the aid of Dr. Fate, the League journeys to Kurungi, an alternate world where Lovecraftian amphibian creatures and strange bull-beasts wage war. Lantern finds his lost colleague and uncovers a secret link between the Guardians of the Universe (who power his ring) and this strange old world. If you enjoy straightforward super-heroics, you’d do well to look elsewhere. But if you like seeing Earth’s mightiest heroes thrown into the weirdest world of all—and you trust Truman’s vast storytelling acumen, you might give this a look.
