Dell’s Red Ryder Comics, featuring Fred Harman’s intrepid frontier lawman and his sidekick Little Beaver, was one of the most successful and long-running comic strip adaptations. The early issues reprinted Red Ryder Sunday strips along with other classic adventure-hero serials such as Captain Easy and Alley Oop. Eventually, talented writer/artist Harmon began producing original material for the 52-page issues—generally three to four stories per month.

Red Ryder is a tough-as-nails cowboy matching wits and bullets with the typical array of frontier bad-guys, including cattle rustlers, crooked politicians, Mexican banditos, and stagecoach robbers. His no-nonsense approach was lightened up by the comic relief of Little Beaver, a feisty Indian kid.
