Mega Man
(Dreamwave, 2003)
™ and ©2003 Dreamwave Productions
Mega Man, the star of videogames and animation, now enters the world of comics. He’s not really a “man” in any sense of the word. He is a robot in the form of a boy. As Rocky, the “son” of genius inventor Dr. Light, he must attend his first day of junior high school. As Mega Man, he must hunt for saboteurs attacking his “father’s” works. The latter usually involves battling other robots, much larger than himself.
To say that Mega Man resembles Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy is to state the obvious. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Many comics and cartoon characters are inspired to various degrees by previous works. Even the venerable Superman and Batman drew inspiration from prior characters. Since Astro Boy’s current series of trade paperbacks is hardly an impulse purchase for the casual young reader, Megaman is something Astro’s fan might enjoy. (Conversely, kids who are into Megaman might then be introduced to Astro Boy.)
— Jack Abramowitz
