James “Rhodey” Rhodes was Iron Man for a time, and after he returned the red-and-gold armor to Tony Stark, he operated for a while under the nom de guerre War Machine. But now he’s a broken man, feeling sorry for himself and holding onto the only remnant of his super-hero days – his War Machine helmet. When a death in the family calls him back to New York City, Rhodey begins his journey back to himself, back to his purpose – which starts with the mission to find his loved one’s killer. Black Panther writer Christopher Priest’s style is cynical, gritty, urban, and The Amazing Spider-Man artist Joe Bennett’s pictures are equal to the darker tone Priest has established.
