Onslaught: Marvel

Marvel’s 1996 mega-event “Onslaught” concluded with this giant special. The villain Onslaught had been revealed as the product of Professor X and Magneto’s dark sides being merged when Professor X “mindwiped” Magneto some time ago. Onslaught had since been gathering his power within Xavier, and has since taken physical form as an unstoppable force of destruction.

In this final face-off, virtually of Earth’s heroes join forces to take on the mighty Onslaught. In the end, defeating him meant that The Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and other non-mutant heroes were forced to absorb his essence, then be themselves destroyed by the X-Men. When the smoke cleared, Earth had lost most of its heroes.

Of course, the heroes would return again. As planned, Onslaught merely paved the way for a series of new “Heroes Reborn” titles from Image’s top artists.
