Lobo/Deadman: the Brave and the Bald

    (DC, 1995)
™ and ©1995 DC Comics

DC definitely gets the “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations” award for this bizarre one-shot. Teaming perennial supernatural supporting star Deadman with intergalactic delinquent Lobo is nothing if not original, and picking up a forgotten plot thread from Jack Kirby’s Forever People storyline to implicate cosmic heavy Darkseid even creates a plausible justification for such a pairing. Martin Edmond paints the whole romp in a surreal Vaughan Bode-meets-Bill Seinkewicz style, while Alan Grant gives inspired voice to Lobo’s usual foul bluster. Yeah, Lobo’s pretty played out, and Deadman hasn’t served a useful purpose in 25 years, but DC fans could do a lot worse than this weird little book. Extra points for the witty title!
