Merton of the Movement
(Last Gasp, 1971)
™ and ©1971 Cocoanut Comix
Bobby London would later draw the Popeye newspaper strip, and turns out two one-pagers in the style of Popeye’s creator E.C.Segar. For the title strip, though, he’s aping George Herriman’s style for a discursive romp about the hapless Merton, always overtaken by fate. London also provides an autobiographical strip detailing his early career run-ins with counterculture magazines and their expectations of cartoonists.
The issue is rounded out by Shary Flenniken’s Trots And Bonnie, Ted Richards’ Dopin’ Dan, Pollyanna Pals by Gary Hallgren, who delivers a very good Cliff Sterrett impersonation.
