Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Emblazoned with an eye-catching cover by Mike Wieringo, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 kicks off the 12-part “Spider-Man: The Other—Evolve or Die” crossover series. Peter David bolts out of the starting gate with unabashed fun and fury, creating credible conflict within Peter Parker’s marriage, introducing a formidable new foe, and foreshadowing things to come via nightmares, all within the first three pages.

As a member of The Avengers, Spider-Man would seem to have few financial problems. However, The Webbed Wonder wouldn’t be who he is without woes, and this issue heaps them on by the shovelful, but without resorting to the kind of overkill found in Identity Crisis and Avengers Disassembled. David delivers his usual punchy dialogue, and the final page alone will keep readers hooked.

Wieringo is a good choice to pencil a modern Spider-Man story. His cartoony style will please younger fans, while his sleekly drawn, classically posed Spider-Man will pacify readers who have fond memories of Steve Ditko and John Romita. Don’t like the “apron” on the new villain, though.
