Timely Presents: Human Torch

    (Marvel, 1999)
™ and © 1941 Marvel Characters, Inc.

From the moment that the original android Human Torch and the seaborn misanthrope Sub-Mariner debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics #1, it was clear that a battle of the elements would soon be brewing. The two popular characters squared off several times during the early 1940s in Marvel Mystery Comics, but the 60-page battle royal unfolded in The Human Torch #5 (Fall, 1941). In 1999, Marvel reprinted the classic issue in its entirety with a new cover by Ray Lago and afterword by Roy Thomas. Here, readers of the modern age can enjoy the breathless excitement that artists Carl Burgos and Bill Everett brought to their creations during the innocent early days of the Golden Age. In less than 6 months, the Torch and the Sub-Mariner would be fighting side-by-side against the Axis as World War II put comic-book rivalries in perspective.
