Zero Zero

Over the years, Marvel and DC have had several “tryout” titles for new artists. Normally these are anthologies featuring established characters. The more daring ones might even go so far as to let the auditioning team use its own characters and stories. Still, none of these titles comes close to the degree of freedom accorded the artists in Zero Zero.

Begun in 1995, Zero Zero is a spotlight for experimental cartoonists, published by Fantagraphics—one of the most daring comic publishers. The stories contained here are not meant for readers who like super-hero clichés or straightforward storylines. Depending on the artist, the illustrations range from stark and angst-ridden to minimalist and surreal. The storylines similarly bounce from one-page black humor to stream-of-consciousness narrative. It’s definitely not for everyone, but readers can find some exciting surprises inside.
