English detective Charlie Northern has a difficult assignment. “Hired” by childhood friend Cardinal Marcel LeClair to find out who killed Cardinal William Richleau and to learn what exactly is going on in the catacombs beneath the Vatican, Northern encounters a problem in Cardinal Toscianni. How do you start investigating, when the evidence has been swept clean by rain, a zealous cleaning staff, and nervous clergy? Five Swiss guards witnessed the cardinal’s fall from grace (from the window) but they may not talk. Incomplete police records don’t help, either.

Both story and art are fascinating. The art by Humberto Ramos and Leonardo Olea is inspired, and the rainy look is well done. The long hall shots are moody and reinforce the cold Cardinal Toscianni. This tale could not have worked in full sunlight, and the catacomb setting adds to the mystery of this Vatican-inspired investigation. If you enjoyed Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, this one will keep you glued to the last page.
