Bozo
(Dell, 1951-1952)
™ and © Dell Publishing Co.
As the host of a popular TV cartoon show, Bozo the Clown was once a cultural icon known to children across the country. In fact, before the introduction of McDonald’s Ronald McDonald, Bozo was possibly the most famous clown in America. In his comics, Bozo is the owner of the Minikin Circus, and is known as the world’s greatest animal trainer. Of course, he often gets involved in funny and sometimes dangerous adventures, but with the help of his pal Sparky, things usually turn out okay.
Bozo first appeared in Four Color #285, which is considered the first of seven issues that ran under his own name in the early Fifties. He also starred in four other Four Color issues and had a second series about a decade later, but it only lasted four issues. He was lost to obscurity until 1992, when Innovation released a reprint edition of Four Color #285.
