Matt Wagner’s Mage was a complex mix of mythology and action-adventure. Its hero was a man named Kevin, who finds himself reluctantly cast as a hero, then discovers he is unable to part with the power once he has it. On the surface, Mage is about Kevin’s struggle against shapeshifters called the Gracklefinks. But the true story is played out on many levels, as Kevin discovers his true role as a latter-day King Arthur, and that his enemies are agents of a primal evil.

Wagner’s Grendel played a pivotal role in this series (and indeed, was killed in issue #13). Fans of the Grendel series that Wagner later did for Comico would be well advised to check out Mage as well.
