The Crimson Nun

(From The Slings and Arrows Comic Guide)

Set in the late 1930s/early 1940s, this is a martial arts/super-hero fantasy rather than a period piece. The idea that a woman in a tightly laced judo outfit with a red-lined hood constitutes a ‘nun’ is a good indication as to how much leeway the reader has to give The Crimson Nun’s authors. Despite that and the generic hardware and location shots generic this is an extremely attractive comic. The script by Brian Farrens is suitably unintrusive and Bobby Diaz’s big-faced artwork is surprisingly effective. The production standards are excellent, as are the inks and coloring. Since this spins-off from Ben Dunn’s Warrior Nun Areala, that would probably be a sensible place to familiarise yourself with the characters and the stylised setting. ~SW
