Fans of DC’s Vertigo line may want to check out The Book of Lost Souls, part of Marvel’s Icon imprint. Written by J. Michael Straczynski, widely known for the creation of Babylon 5 and his run on Amazing Spider-Man, the first issue introduces Jonathan, a long-haired brooder type (complete with open collar and flowing coat) who would feel right at home in a Gothic romance novel. While ruminating on a past filled with disappointment, the cryptic character jumps off a bridge, seemingly ending his Earthly existence. Naturally (make that supernaturally), he ends up in a netherworld of sorts occupied by a (mystery fans take note) talking cat and a mysterious Dark Man with a mission.

This is a pretty cool set-up, especially for female readers looking for something nonviolent, yet darkly spiritual. You know that funky-looking gal who works at the record store or coffee bar? This is the book for her.

Colleen Doran’s art is gorgeous, as usual, but looks here as though it were channeled through the spirit of Alex Maleev.
