Witchblade and Darkness have enjoyed several crossover specials over the years, and readers have enjoyed the witty repartee and less-than-subtle sexual tension between detective Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado in these team-ups. But in the aptly titled Overkill, writer Paul Jenkins takes the verbal interplay and the action a notch higher as the deadly characters from the Aliens and Predator franchises enter the fray. In this prestige-format limited series, Pezzini and Estacado are investigating the bloody murders of numerous criminal druglords. In short order they find themselves battling the culprit: the ruthless, acid-blooded killing machine that is the Alien. At the same time, they find themselves becoming prey as they enter the crosshairs of the offworld hunter known only as Predator. You’d think such a top-heavy cast of killer characters would turn the story into a ruinous mess, but Jenkins is up to the task of keeping everything in narrative perspective, while artist Clarence Lansang makes sure everyone gets their own little slice of the artistic limelight.
