The Push Man and Other Stories

If you’re looking for magical schoolgirls or fantasy quests, look elsewhere. In this collection of short stories from a little-known manga pioneer, the characters inhabit a bleak, modern world. Each self-contained story depicts a man at a moment of crisis, usually involving a woman. One takes drastic action to appease his dissatisfied wife. Another hides the perfect woman under his bed sheets. Loneliness abounds, dirtiness lurks just beneath the surface, and lives are carelessly thrown away. Some may take issue with Tatsumi’s repetitive depictions of women as shrews and prostitutes, but they only add to his dark vision.
