Captain America Comics

As war raged across Europe in 1941, America watched the action nervously from the sidelines. There were many, however, who yearned to strike back at Hitler. Among these was Joe Simon, who, along with Jack Kirby, created Captain America as an exercise in patriotic wish fulfillment. The first issue cover even features Captain America wading through a legion of Nazis to land a hard right cross on Hitler’s chin.

Along with the premiere of Captain America himself, this series introduced young sidekick “Bucky” Barnes, a camp mascot who discovered Captain America’s secret identity and decided to join him on his adventures. During the war years of 1941–1945, the pair took on Nazis and fifth columnists, and their fan club, “The Sentinels of Liberty,” even turned in numerous neighbors as suspected saboteurs. Once the war was over, however, Cap faded from sight, to be reawakened later in The Avengers #4.
