Sinfest

    (Museworks, 2002)
™ and ©2002 Tatsuya Ishida

Tatsuya Ishida’s irreverent, but wildly funny web comic strip, Sinfest, is collected in this softbound book. The principal players are Slick, a self-absorbed slacker; and Monique, the object of Slick’s lust and an uninhibited nymph. Other reoccurring characters are Pooch and Percival, a dog and cat who respectively embody the stereotypical enthusiasm and condescension associated with dogs and cats. The most intriguing aspect of this strip is the supporting roles of God and Devil. God uses hand puppets in the clouds to alternatively console and mock, (mostly mock), his disciples while seeming to enjoy himself immensely. The Devil has a small stand, á la Lucy in Peanuts where, instead of psychiatric advice, he advertises, “Anything You Want” for your immortal soul.

Ishida’s satirical humor has a bit of a mature edge, (the strip isn’t named Sinfest for nothing), so his presence on the Internet rather than in a newspaper syndicate is regrettable but understandable.
