Ultraman (Nemesis)
(Nemesis, 1994)
™ and ©1993 Tsuburaya Productions Co., Inc.
Ultraman is one of a race of “Ultramen” who defend Earth from evil forces. They possess great powers, but are unable to use them in our dimension unless they inhabit the body of a mortal. As this series begins, a spirit of evil has Earth in its grasp, visiting plague and chaos upon its people. Ultraman attempted to battle this spirit but was trapped instead. Jack Shindo—Ultraman’s earthly incarnation— succeeded in freeing him, but died in doing so. With Shindo gone, Ultraman’s power passed on to Ace Kimura.
This character has only recently been noticed in the U.S., but Ultraman has long been a favorite in Japan, with cartoon and live-action TV shows and a popular line of toys. Its American comics debut had the dubious distinction of being the first to bill itself as “issue #-1.” This seems a particularly suspect form of one-upsmanship in an industry that only recently invented the “#0” issue for origins (and to bump up sales, since it seems to come “before” issue #1).
