Dani—aka Mirage—can project convincing illusions; Shan—aka Karma—is a world–class telepath; Rahne—aka Wolfsbane—is a lycanthrope who is trapped in a half-wolf/half-human state; and Amara—aka Magma—becomes a being of fire who can manipulate both flames and earth. They were members of the original New Mutants team, and they have returned to Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning to teach. The first few issues of this addition to Marvel’s Tsunami line of youth-skewed, manga-inspired titles deals with the recruitment of new students, like Wind Dancer, Prodigy, and Elixir; but the focus here is not on super-heroics as much as it is on the inner workings of a very exclusive private high school. Sure, the old team was out in the field, taking on Legion, the Hellions, and Sabretooth, but this time out, Professor X is not developing the next world–saving force: he’s giving kids a quality education and helping them come to terms with their mutant abilities. Leave the world–saving to the grown–ups; these youngsters have to prepare for their SATs.
