Writer Jeff Mariotte seems to have been channeling Joe Lansdale to create this five-issue mini-series. It’s a gripping story of the Old West which takes a standard “chase down the bad guys” Western story and injects it with a double-shot of horror. Along with the standard sheriffs, six-guns, cowboy hats, and horses, Desperadoes features one of the most terrifying serial killers ever seen in the genre.

A man named Leander Peik has been coldly slaughtering American Indian women and their half-breed children. Gideon Brood, Jerome Alexander Betts, and Abby Degrazia are riding hard on his trail, seeking revenge for Peik’s ghastly murder of Gideon’s only child. Tragically, Gideon and his partners ended up in a gunfight in which a stray bullet killed the wife of a local sheriff. The three are now Desperadoes—pursuing a killer while they themselves are pursued by the sheriff and his posse.
