Graphic Nonfiction: Harriet Tubman

    (Rosen, 2005)
™ and © Rosen

Earning the nickname of Moses for her efforts, Harriet Tubman was personally responsible for freeing over 70 slaves, including her own parents, and helped hundreds of others in their escape efforts. Both before and during the Civil War, Harriet was an active abolitionist who made at least 13 dangerous missions into Confederate states. Even after she had a price on her head she continued her work, often relying on trickery and disguise to keep from being recognized or captured. She served the cause as everything from nurse to spy, and even organized and led troops.

As much comic book as textbook, this classroom aid details Harriet Tubman’s life and her fight to put an end to slavery. It includes historical information on the Underground Railroad, related aspects of the Civil War, and other important abolitionists. Although intended for students, mature readers are likely to learn a few things, too.
