Strange Days

    (Eclipse, 1984)
™ and ©1984 Brendan McCarthy, Peter Milligan and Brett Ewins

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

Billed as the first “truly New Wave comic,” Strange Days, a collection of stories by Pete Milligan illustrated by Brendan McCarthy and Bret Ewins, certainly looked radical compared to the rest of Eclipse’s output. Apart from the surreal, drug-fuelled Shockwave, for which McCarthy conjured up amazing watery landscapes above which floated huge vessels in the shape of famous people’s heads, the other strips were firmly rooted in super-hero tradition, but given enough of a spin to make them fun and “cool.” Unfortunately, Johnny Nemo, stylish future PI, and Paradax, the gaunt, gauche, teen super-hero, didn’t catch on, although these characters survived the title’s brief lifespan to appear in U.K. newsstand anthology Deadline, and the Paradax stories were collected as a one-shot. ~FJ
