Wasted Minute
(Yellow Nightmares Press, 2004)
™ and © Yellow Nightmares Press
This little-known series is two parts The Incredibles with three parts Slacker Manifesto thrown in. Herein exists a world of super-heroes (and, presumably super-villains) who have been ordered to surrender their status and live ordinary lives. Without using their powers, they’re mostly like us—with the disadvantage that, in pursuing the betterment of mankind with their powers, they’ve neglected getting that MA from Harvard… so many of them (even those with hyper-intelligence as a power) are stuck in Joe jobs. Like many workers, they’re tired of low pay, demanding hours, and zero job satisfaction. This is one story about a group of super-hero friends who learn how to cope with these conditions.
The key to the appeal behind Wasted Minute is the writing by Lewis Helfano. The dialogue isn’t stellar, but the situations and flow of the story work well and remain entertaining throughout the one-shot issue. Oh, and don’t be put off by the cover: It’s not a living-dead comic book, and it is a fitting cover. The art isn’t stellar but it does the job.
